Every day, we wake up to a beautiful day, go ahead and have our breakfast, choose our clothes for the day, and then get in a car to go to school. Yet, we never notice how we have all we do. How do we get a fresh, warm meal every day? A closet filled with choices? How do we have a car to ride in? How do we have a roof to live under, how do we have everything a human can need, and more?
It's time to notice the silent pillar of support that keeps us going and keeps our lives running smoothly. When have you ever had to worry about feeding your family while living with your parents? Never. Since birth till adulthood, we've depended on our fathers to help us become who we are. They are the reason we didn't starve to death when we were toddlers. They are the reason we flex our wrists to show people expensive watches, because our fathers gave us money to buy them. All the consoles, the phones, the devices, they were all bought not with your money, but your father's. They could've chosen not to, they could've refused to spend their whole lives working, so you wouldn't complain. Yet, every time you wanted something, they let you have it. They gave you the childhood you dreamed of. They were the support your family clung to, and without them, it would've all come ringing down.
The only thing they ever asked in return was a portion of respect reserved for them. Today is father's day, and today is the day we honour the real life super heroes that saved us every time we were about to fall, that held us high in the air when nobody celebrated our achievements, they were the ones that gave us the self esteem, the pride, to walk through corridors with respect. We are forever in debt to them. Yet, they refuse to let us pay that debt, though it is a debt we cannot repay. The only payment they accept? It isn't cash or card, it's respect.
So if you still have the chance, honour it, honour that pillar that supported you through every earthquake you ever had to face. Give them a hug, a bit of love, a lot of respect.
This is Abdullah Shahid, signing off.
